Henry ALFREY (1794-1856)

and Jane STANDING (1797-1836)

St. Peter's, Henfield, circa 1905 - from http://www.westsussexpast.org.uk/pictures/index.htmlHenry Alfrey and Jane Standing married by banns on 25 October 1820 in Henfield, Sussex.  They were both then of Henfield.  The witnesses to the marriage were William Hall Vinall and Jane Alfrey.  (Jane was Henry's sister and she married William Hall Vinall in 1824.)  (Henry and Jane were not my direct ancestors.  Henry was the brother of my 5x Great Grandmother, Ann Alfrey.)

Henry Alfrey was baptised on 18 May 1794 in Henfield.  He was the fourth son and eighth child of Philip Alfrey (1754-1835) and Mary Botting (c1753-1833).  He died aged 68 years and was buried on 16 December 1856 in Henfield.  When the 1851 census was recorded he was a 56 year old agricultural labourer lodging in the home of his son-in-law James Goacher in the High Street, Henfield.

Jane Standing was baptised on 15 October 1797 in Henfield and was the daughter of Henry Standing (1772-?) and Mary Kensett (1771-?).  Jane died aged 38 years and was buried on 6 April 1836 in Henfield.  Her grandparents were Richard Standen and Jane Matthews, and William Kinsett and Mary Muzzle.  (So far I have no known conncetion to Jane.)

  2. Henry Alfrey was baptised on 24 July 1825 in Henfield.  He married Mary Anne Breeds on 1 April 1850 in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.

  3. Jane Alfrey was baptised on 30 September 1827 in Henfield.  She died between 1861 and 1871.  Her death may have been registered in the second quarter of 1865 in the Steyning registration district, as Jane Goacher.

    Jane had an illegitimate son:

    1. William Allfree was born on 8 August 1846 and baptised on 13 September 1846 in Henfield.  In the 1851 census his name was recorded as William Goacher and he was then 4 years old.  In 1861 he was 14 year old agricultural labourer and his surname was still recorded as Goacher.

Jane married James Goacher on 6 April 1849 in Henfield.  The couple were living in the High Street when the 1851 census was recorded and James was 29 year old shoemaker journeyman.  They were still living in the High Street in 1861 and again in 1871, but James was then described as a widower.
