Edward ALFREY (1598-1642)

and Hester BYSSHE (c1598-1638)

Edward Alfrey and Hester Bysshe were my 11x Great Grandparents.  (Click here to see their place in my pedigree chart.)  They married before or about 1619.

Edward Alfrey was most probably born at Gulledge in East Grinstead and baptised on 22 October 1598 at the parish church of St. Swithun in East Grinstead, Sussex.  He was the eldest and only son Edward Alfrey (1579-1610) and Anne Foster.  He died on 21 April 1642 at Gulledge.  The East Grinstead burial register from 1640-1648 is incomplete or missing and I have not so been able to find his burial.  His will was dated 4 April 1642 and proved on 4 April 1643.  Edward inherited Gulledge in East Grinstead from his Grandfather, Edward Alfrey (c1547-1623).  An area known as Gulledge had been occupied by Alfreys since at least the 1360's, but the house of that name which still stands was possibly built in the 1570's.

The photograph is of Gulledge, and has been taken with thanks from:  Felbridge & District History Group

Hester Byshe may have been born at Fen Place and baptised on 2 September 1598 as Vrsula Byshe, but this was probably a mistake as an elder sister named Ursula was alive in 1598.  She may have been the daughter of John Bysshe (c1553-1626) of Fen Place, Worth, Sussex and Mercy Bysshe (c1556-1615).  Or she may have been a daughter of Matthew Bysshe.  Hester was buried on 14 November 1638 in East Grinstead when she was described as Ester Alfrey, wife of Edward, gent.  William Bysshe (1587-1638), son of John and Mercy, was the antecedent of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Edward Alfrey and Hester Bysshe had 6 known children:

  1. 5 89 Heaster Alfree was baptised on 6 May 1619 in Worth, Sussex.  She married Mr. Henry Smith on 4 May 1642 in Worth.  They had 1 known son:

    1. Henry Smith was baptised on 24 September 1648 in East Grinstead.

  2. Edward Alfrey was born on 12 August 1621 and baptised on 19 August 1621 in East Grinstead.  He was the Executor of his father's will by which he inherited Gulledge, but had ceased to occupy the property by at least 1662.  He died in 1672 and Letters of Administration were granted to his relict Susanna of New Shoreham on 1 February 1671/2.

Edward married Susan Blaker before 1655.

Susan was born about 1619 and was buried on 8 April 1676 in Shoreham, Sussex.  Susan was the daughter of Edward Blaker (c1570-1652) a gentleman of Portslade, Sussex and Susanna Scrase (?-1679).

Edward and Susan had 1 known son:

    1. Edward Alfrey was baptised on 7 October 1655 in New Shoreham, Sussex.

  3. Ann Alfrey was baptised on 22 November 1623 in East Grinstead.

  4. Richard Alfrey was baptised on 2 February 1624/5 in East Grinstead.

    Richard married Anne before 1653.

Anne was buried on 25 May 1668 in East Grinstead.

Richard and Anne had 1 known son:

    1. Edward Alfrey was baptised on 8 March 1652/3 in East Grinstead.

Did Richard and Anne also have a son named Richard who married Elizabeth before 1672?

  5. William Alfrey was baptised on 22 July 1628 in East Grinstead and buried there on 16 October 1635.

  6. John Alfrey, my 10x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 15 or 18 August 1634 in East Grinstead.  He married Rebecca Tasker in 1662.  (They have their own page.)
