Barcombe, Sussex

The Barcombe parish registers begin in 1581 and the parish
church is dedicated to St. Mary.
My earliest known connection to the parish is with my
Bokes/Box
ancestors, possibly back into the 15th Century up to the 1640's. My
most recent link is with my
Setford
ancestors who lived in the parish from about 1878 until at least 1905.
2x Great Grandfather
Thomas
Setford was buried in Barcombe on 17 May 1905. He died on
15 May at the East Chiltington Workhouse and his death certificate noted
that his home address was (I think) Satchel Cottage or could have been
Thatchers Cottage in Barcombe. He was born in
Chailey in 1838 and married in Ditching in 1862. He and his wife had 8
children, of which only the last child was born in Barcombe in 1878.
4x Great Grandparents
William
Sawyers and
Mary Pearce
where both of Barcombe when they married there on 14 July 1805. He was
born in Maresfield and she in Fletching. They raised their family in
Newick.
7x Great Grandfather
William Boxe
was baptised on 1 January 1647/8 in Barcombe. He moved away and
settled in Ardingly, Sussex. William was the son of George
Boxe and Jane Longley.
8x Great Grandfather
George Boxe
was baptised on 16 April 1615 in Barcombe and buried there on 2 September
1648. He was the son of William Bokes and
Susanna Beard.
9x Great Grandfather
William Bokes
was probably born before the commencement of the parish registers in 1581.
He was buried in Barcombe on 11 July 1620. He was most probably the
son of John Bokes.
10x Great Grandfather
John Bokes
was buried in Barcombe on 12 January 1605/6. He left a will which
stated he was a yeoman of the neighbouring parish of Hamsey, although wished
to be buried in Barcombe.
